Middle Rio Grande Bosque Birding Tours

Discover the magic of New Mexico’s Wildlife!

New Mexico plays a vital role in the winter habitat for a variety of avian species, the most recognizable is the Sandhill Crane. This large crane stands at just under 3.9’ tall and has an impressive wingspan of 6.6’. Weighing in at or near 16 lbs. for an adult, this is one big bird! New Mexico is home to largest subspecies of Sandhill Crane, called the Greater Sandhill which nest in the Rocky Mountain Region of the United States. This subspecies is part of the Mid-Continent population, which when counted during the spring of 2020 at the Crane Trust numbered 1.25 million birds on and along the Platte River in Nebraska!

Sunrise and Sunset Tours are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays

Sunrise tours are where we will find Sandhill Cranes in our local loafing and feeding areas. On these tours you will learn about the life history of Sandhill Cranes and why they come to overwinter in New Mexico. In addition to seeing Sandhill Cranes we will have many opportunities to observe a variety of wildlife to include a variety of waterfowl, upland game birds, hawks/ raptors, and mammals.

Please bear in mind that wild animals are just that, Wild. We optimize our trips to areas that have been specifically managed for wildlife through conservation practices and habitat manipulation for keystone species.

Tours guest will meet and depart from the shop. On this tour we will explore areas from Bernardo Wildlife Area to Los Ranchos. Our tour will follow designated auto roads through wildlife management areas, use blinds and overlooks to help us find and identify New Mexico’s abundant and amazing wildlife.

We will have a spotting scope available for our guest, but we encourage you to bring your favorite binoculars and cameras.

The tour price includes transportation cost, interpretive guide, and a mid morning snack.
