Top 5 Mountain Bike Areas Around Albuquerque, New Mexico

A locals list.

I have been riding the trails around Albuquerque since 2015. I can tell you a lot about what has changed around town from the systems that have been neglected to systems that have been developed. Often times when visitors come to ride for the first time, I send them to some of the most iconic areas like the Dragons Back at White Mesa. Other times I will hear what they have found on trail forks or MTB Project and give them the low down on what has changed.

Your skill level, fitness, and riding style are really makes or breaks your experience in any place you ride here in New Mexico. The trail systems below are a solid go to for any rider who can handle most blue rated trails.

  1. White Mesa Bike Trails: Located in the nearby White Mesa Recreation Area, these trails offer a variety of options for riders of all skill levels. From easy loops to more technical terrain, White Mesa provides a diverse riding experience amid stunning desert landscapes. The Dragons Back is a classic ride which should be done Clock-Wise. There is a lot of views to take in and it really pays to ride more than one lap.

  2. Foothills Trail System: With a network of interconnected trails in the Sandia Foothills, this area provides a great mix of riding options. The trails offer scenic views of Albuquerque and a range of difficulty levels, making it suitable for riders of all abilities. Do you like techy rocky trails? Then ride to Foo-Ville in the South Foothills. Not for you? Sounds like a North Foot Hills ride is instore for you then. The North Foothills offers xc level trail with some short techy baby heads to keep you on your toes. Either location you will be riding in the kitty litter so don’t run your tire pressure too high.

  3. Gutierrez Canyon Open Space: Gutierrez Canyon Open Space offers a scenic mountain biking experience with a mix of singletrack trails. Riders can explore the beautiful natural surroundings while enjoying a moderately challenging ride. This is a great system to get lost in or just take in the view around Cedar Crest. Gutie, is a great place to take your kids who want to get they grove on and ride fast. Please bare in mind that this is a multi-purpose trail and it is common to see other users including equestrians. The best pay off is the location. The parking lost is next to a coffee shop and a brewery to pre and post ride libations.

  4. Tunnel Canyon Trail: Located in the Manzanita Mountains, this trail is known for its challenging climbs and descents. The reward is the panoramic view of the Rio Grande Valley. It's a must-visit for experienced mountain bikers seeking an adrenaline rush. When I ride I enjoy climbing up Tunnel and then make a loop to descend on Bird House. This can be a challenging ride for some. I would give the descent a blue/black rating.

  5. Cedro Peak and Otero Canyon: These trails offer a mix of singletrack and forest roads in the Cibola National Forest. The terrain varies from rocky to smooth, providing a diverse riding experience. Cedro Peak and Otero Canyon are great options for riders looking for a bit of adventure.

Number 4 & 5 are in what we call the “East Mountains”. Get off I-40 at Tijeras and head South. Doing so you will pass a lot of amazing trials, it pays to have a great map out here, so CLICK HERE. Fast XC to HOLY #!%$ can be ridden out here so pack a lunch and plenty of water, it is easy to ride 15-30 miles with lots of elevation (1500’-2800’+” in a day).

While there are a way more trails available that what’s listed I hope this serves as a starting point for your next ride. Did you know MST Adventures offers Rental Bikes, Guide Service, and Clinics/Coaching? Give us a call the next time you head out!
